What we Aim for
The Aruba Paralympic Committee (APC) is a fierce proponent of the concept that there should be no disparities between people with and people without disabilities. Living a healthy lifestyle is important and should be achievable to everyone.
This can be done through the Paralympic movement. The Paralympic movement is a global movement that involves over 160 countries who have committed themselves to providing sporting opportunities, from mass sport to elite sport, for people with disabilities. Furthermore, the National Paralympic Committees from these countries function on the belief that people with disabilities should have the same opportunities as people without disabilities.
With this concept in mind, Para-athletes are comparable to Olympic athletes. For the reasons mentioned above, the Aruba Paralympic Committee (APC) would like to introduce Paralympic sports as a health prevention program for people with physical disabilities in Aruba.
The sports currently practiced by Para-athletes in Aruba are athletics, judo, swimming, and Para-taekwondo. We are striving to introduce boccia, sitting volleyball, Para-badminton and wheelchair basketball as new Para-sports soon!
our core values
LIVING LIFE INDIVIDUALLY,
TOGETHER
Aruba has approximately 100,000 inhabitants. It has been estimated by the Census 2010 that there are about 4000 people with limitations on the island. These limitations include visual, physical, and intellectual disabilities. In 2011, the Ministry of Social Affairs obtained information on people with disabilities in Aruba.
The results of this study have shown that this population wants a health prevention program that will decrease their chances of getting various health problems in the future.
This can be done through Paralympic Sport. APC believes that we can get at least 50 people with limitations actively participating in disability sport.
Other needs that this population has expressed in this study are that they want to be more accepted by their family and members of the community and have a more accessible infrastructure.
